Wireless headphones are an increasingly used accessory for mobile phones. They are becoming more advanced and manufacturers are preparing proposals for customers with different needs. Thanks to the development of the bluetooth standard, power consumption is reduced and bandwidth is increased, thus improving the quality of the transmitted audio.
In this test, we will look at three different Plantronics headphones designed for a variety of applications: work, sports and music.
Edge is one of the smaller headphones available on Plantronics. It is also the most advanced model for everyday work. The earpiece is inserted into the ear. Silicone, available in 3 sizes of inserts, allows quite some fixation to the earlobe. During the walk and even more violent movements, the handset does not fall from the ear. If it is not enough for us then we can attach an additional headband on the ear – then the risk of falling is practically zero.
The Voyager Edge is an interesting kit because it comes with an extra carrying case to charge. Thanks to that, for a long time we forget to connect it to the charger. The built-in rechargeable battery lasts 6 hours of talk time and the case increases the time by 10 hours.
Plantronics Edge’s technical specifications put it in the forefront of wireless headphones. It is equipped with three microphones thanks to which the built-in DSP processor is able to eliminate background noise such as noise, wind and traffic. In practice it works very well, because our interlocutor hears our voice well. Edge is able to recognize voice commands issued by the user – for example, the command “answer” To pick up the call a check the battery ?? Check the battery charge level. Voice commands also allow us to ignore the call, start the pairing process, re-dial the number, etc. In addition to English, French, German and Spanish are also supported. To use them, you need to upload them to the handset using a special program.

An additional advantage is the resistance to moisture. The handset is protected with P2i nano-coating. The emerging opportunities in practical solutions of Jaybird X2. During normal use, the battery charge indicator is also displayed on the screen. The manufacturer also offers a special Find myHeadset mobile application that locates the lost handset. If it is in the bluetooth range – we can send it a command to turn on the sound signal to make it easier to locate. If out of reach – we can use the BackTrack feature, which in the mobile application will display the last location of the phone with the connected handset on the map.
For sports enthusiasts is a whole other plantronics handset. Backbeat Fit is a stereo Bluetooth headset with ear strap attached to the neck. This model supports Bluetooth 3.0 and stereo A2DP profile. Like the previously described Edge – this handset has also been protected with P2i Moisture Protector. Loudspeakers allow you to listen to music for 8 hours and talk for 6 hours. Standby time is 14 days. In order to extend the working time, the manufacturer has equipped them with the DeepSleep feature, which puts the device into hibernation mode if it is out of bluetooth range. The weight of the device is 24 grams.
We also have a carrying case for earphones. We can rotate it to the other side and then it can act as a shoulder mount on which we put our phone. The case holds mid-range phones. If we have a bigger 5-inch device or phablet, it just will not fit.
The control buttons on both handsets allow us to control music playback and receive calls. Due to the fact that the earphones are small, it is a good idea to hit the right places. Device memory allows you to pair with up to 8 phones or other bluetooth devices.
Backbeat Fit is a good option for people who are actively involved in sports. Compact dimensions make it ideal for jogging or gym work, and the waterproof and P2i special coating will ensure that no rain during the morning jogging or sweat in the gym will not be a threat to them.
The most expensive of the products tested by Plantronics is Backbeat Pro. It costs about 800 dollars a bluetooth headset designed for enjoying music. Headphones are very solid, made of high quality materials. They are large (weight is 340 grams), and thanks to the large pillows we are well isolated from the ambient sounds. The headband is good enough to hold the headphones on, so there is no risk of falling asleep or even running – though you have to admit that they are too big for the sport.
Pairing the headphones with the phone went smoothly. If we have an NFC phone then we can speed up the process by placing the phone on the headset. Backbeat Pro supports Bluetooth 4.0 + EDR and A2DP and AVCRP profiles as well as Handsfree 1.6 and Headset 1.2. The Multipoint function allows simultaneous pairing of headphones with two devices. As a result, we can listen to music from your home audio system at the same time and switch to talking on your mobile phone.
Playback control is thought-through and simple. The large size of the headphones makes the control buttons big and we have no problem catching them. On the left side there are playback control buttons – center play / pause and forward / backward playback on the outer rotary ring. On the right side you will find a large button for receiving calls and a rotary ring for volume control. The headphones also include a power button, a mute button, and a button for activating the external mute system that is about to be played. The built-in sensor pauses to play music when we remove earphones.

The headphones and built-in electronics make the ambient noise very quiet. Coming from the metro or tram we are practically isolated from the noise and we can concentrate only on music. Compared to earbuds, this is a significant plus. In addition, we can turn on the ANC noise cancellation system, which, thanks to its built-in microphone, actively dampens ambient noise.
The advantage of the top-of-the-line Plantronics headphones is also very long – because of the 24 hours of music playback time. If the headset is in standby mode, it will take up to 3 weeks and if in sleep mode (which turns on when the bluetooth range is off) it is even half a year. Full charge of the built-in Li-Ion battery takes about 3 hours.
Typically, the range of bluetooth headphones is up to 10 meters. For Backbeat Pro, it has been increased to 100 meters, but it is required to have a Class 1 bluetooth device that has increased transmit power.
The sound of the headphones is very good. We have deep bass, good sound reproduction for low and high tones. Listening to music is a real pleasure. In addition to listening to music, we can also use it to make phone calls. Built-in microphones sound good and our interlocutor hears a clear and clear voice. In the new kit, you will find, in addition to the headphones, a 3.5 mm cable with remote control for iPhone music, a microUSB charging cable and a carrying case.…
